Spittal is a real family friendly beach with sand for sandcastles, an excellent play-park and an exciting splash-park area (which operates in the Summer months whenever possible) as well as amusements, toilet and café facilities in the Venetian pavilion of 1928.
Spittal has long been known as a holiday resort, since the 18th century when visitors were keen to bathe in the sea here and drink from the spa well. The Victorian promenade allows visitors to stroll by the sea, taking in the fresh North Sea air and beautiful views across the sea, of the Lighthouse, the Elizabethan Walls and of Berwick town at the mouth of the River Tweed (an excellent place for photography).
The beach leads onto the Northumberland Coastal Path heading south towards Holy Island and onto The Sandstone Way – a new long distance mountain bike route from Berwick to Hexham.
There is open access to the beach and play park all year.
