Overview

Where in Northumberland can you stand on one spot and see THREE castles?

Only on the Royal Tweed Bridge in Berwick-upon-Tweed!

From Golden Square in Berwick town centre, walk over the Royal Tweed Bridge (or New Bridge as it is known) towards Tweedmouth. Stop at the 8th Lamp-post, on the left-hand-side of the bridge, and you can take in a breath taking view which includes Berwick Castle, Holy Island Castle and Bamburgh Castle!

The Royal Tweed Bridge is one of three bridges spanning the River Tweed into Berwick. It is the newest bridge, opened in 1928, and with four concrete arches, it is not as architecturally attractive as it's neighbours. Situated between Berwick Old Bridge (built 1611-1634) and the stunning Royal Border Bridge (1846-1849 designed by Robert Stephenson) it does afford an excellent vantage point of each.

Don't forget your camera for this incredible viewpoint is also a great place to spot local wildlife, including; seals, seabirds, and Berwick's famous herd of mute swans.

If you are staying in Berwick overnight, it is also worth walking back over the bridge as night falls to view the spectacular illumination of the Royal Border Railway Bridge. Best viewed from the right-hand-side of the Royal Tweed Bridge, this multitude of changing coloured lights shows the full beauty and scale of Stephenson's engineering.
