Overview

Overlooking the beautiful River Tweed, Paxton House lies at the heart of 80 acres of riverside, woodland, parkland and gardens. Paxton House was built in 1758 to the design of John and James Adamthis grand country house boasts a collection of Chippendale furniture and a fine collection of Regency furniture by William Trotter of Edinburgh. The magnificent picture gallery was built by Robert Reid in 1814 houses over 70 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland. Here you will see masterpieces by Raeburn, Wilkie and Lawrence alongside many works of local interest.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of walks and trails including our brand new and very popular Fairy Trail and Woodland Trail. We run boat trips up the river Tweed to Horncliffe throughout the season which is a great way to learn about local wildlife and history. Paxton House also has a croquet lawn and 9-hole putting green, picnic areas, two adventure play parks and a host of children's house and grounds competitions, nature trails and activities.

We also have a 15 pitch (none serviced) caravan park in our Kitchen Garden and 4 luxury glamping units down by the river.

With all this plus the Georgian Kitchen, Regency Gift Shop, Stables Restaurant, the fishing museum, and an ever changing event and exhibition programme, Paxton House is not just an historic country house but a fantastic day out for everyone - a family day out in the Scottish Borders that everyone will enjoy.

Paxton House will open Friday 29th March to Sun 3rd November 2019.
