Walking in the footsteps of L.S. Lowry

Walking in the footsteps of L.S. Lowry

Arrive in Berwick-upon-Tweed by train (www.eastcoast.co.uk) - Lowry first travelled to Berwick by steam train in the 1930's, but today you can travel from London to Berwick in just over 3½ hours!
Take the steps down from the station through Castlevale and Coronation Parks and onto the riverside. Take in views of the three bridges spanning the River Tweed, including Stevenson's Royal Border Bridge.
Keep to the Riverside until you reach Berwick's Old Bridge, then head along Bridge Street to Dewar's Lane, the first point on the Lowry Trail.
Visit the Granary Gallery (Dewar's Lane) from 21st June - 21st Sept 2014 (Mon & Tues 12-4pm, Wed-Sun 11am-5pm) to see the 'L.S. Lowry in Berwick & Northumberland' exhibition, with over 20 original Lowry works on display - this is the first exhibition of it's size in Berwick. Enjoy refreshments in the Granary Bistro before beginning the walk.
Follow the Lowry Trail around Berwick town, popping in to see contemporary art at the Gymnasium Gallery and then crossing the river to Tweedmouth. Stop at the Dockside Gallery displying original artworks as well as gifts, cards and paintings for sale. Continue along to Spittal, to enjoy views of the sea while strolling on the promenade.
The Lowry Trail ends back in Berwick with time to pick up some local art from galleries on Bridge street and Castlegate, or perhaps a Lowry souvenir from the Tourist Information Centre, before heading back to the Railway Station.
