*Berwick Male Voice Choir Concert Review

Kirknewton Village Hall 9th March 2019

On Saturday night Berwick Male Voice Choir were guests of Kirknewton. This was a Concert in aid of Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team, apparently the only National Park to have such an Emergency Service (as noted in the vote of thanks).

Anyway what a great night it was. The acoustics in the Hall were excellent and although not a large choir they more than made up in quality of sound. Accompanied by Musical Conductor Chris Enticknap and pianist Margaret Gudgeon, the choir mixed old favourites with new songs. They entered the Hall andstarted straight away with a wonderful rendition of Stout Hearted Men, this was greeted with much applause by an overall appreciative audience. After introduction by new Chairman Ian McCreath, the lilting tones of The Rose and then the new tune Raise Me Up brought the emotional level high. Tempo changed with Ian McCreath’s jocular solo take of If I Were A Rich Man. Another new traditional song, Water Of Tyne next was bookended with the wonderful wispy Wild Mountain Thyme and the stirring anthem What Would I Do Without My Music. Chris Enticknap soloed with Can’t Help Falling In Love. Choir were in full voice on the rousing Do You Hear The People Sing? from Les Miserables. This was greeted with much applause. Last two songs of first half were, What A Wonderful World and the catchy tune, Rhythm Of Life.

After the interlude the choir returned to do an unaccompanied version of the Spiritual My Lord What A Morning, just heavenly. There was a talk on what the Mountain Rescue did and even a survivor’s tale of being rescued. Then the choir raised the roof with By The Riverside. Chris soloed next on piano with Chaminade. Religious tunes, Angels Watching Over Me and How Great Thou Art sequenced well. Next was a solo from My Fair Lady with Ken Budge and Mike Baglee singing Why Can’t A Women Be More Like A Man, another quirky uplifting tune. Dashenka next, was well arranged and very atmospheric. Streets Of London was a mix of choir and audience participation in the chorus which seemed to work well. Bridge Over Troubled Water was next up and then a choir favourite American Trilogy rounded things off. There was an encore along with this, another rendition of By The Riverside, leaving a smile on people’s faces at the end, an entertaining night had by all who attended.

Next concert is Berwick Male Voice Choir’s Gala Concert on 23rd March 2019 at 7.30pm at St Andrews Wallace green Berwick-upon-Tweed, and after tonight’s performance that promises to be another night to remember.
