Nature & Outdoors

Berwick is a compact town with easy access on foot to different landscapes, whether you want to stroll by the riverside or play on sandy beaches. Take the riverside walk known as the New Road, which starts from Love Lane and was built at the end of the Napoleonic Wars by 100 returning soldiers and out of work labourers. Now it offers an easy, level route for all, hugging the riverside with close-up views of wildlife, bridges and winding through archways of the medieval castle wall.

You can also enjoy some breath-taking viewpoints as you walk around the Elizabethan Walls, across the River Tweed and out to sea, with the iconic buildings of Bamburgh and Lindisfarne Castles in the distance on a clear day.

Berwick has two small sandy beaches; a sheltered bay overlooked by Berwick Holiday Centre and the Golf Course, and the 'Little Beach' which is just north of the Pier and accessed from Pier road. Here you can explore the geology of the town and coastal rock pools, with excellent examples of folded and faulted carboniferous rocks.

To the south of the River Tweed is the seaside reosrt of Spittal. Spittal beach is a true family beach, with facilities including children's play park and splashpark, cafe and toilets, promenade and amusements. The whole shoreline from Spittal to Far Skerr is of great geological interest with numerous exposed strata of rocks. Limestone in the area is rich in fossils of crinoids, brachiopods and other life. You can also go rock-pooling in rock pool gullies which are rich in marine life, but walk carefully as these rugged rocky platforms can be difficult to walk along.

Take a short bus ride and you can be hill-walking in the Cheviots, taking a boat trip to the Farne Islands, birdwatching on the coast or exploring the Scottish Borders.
