We have some fascinating wildlife in Northumberland, from the red squirrels in the woodland areas to the grey seals, puffins and seabirds of the Farne Islands, it is almost impossible not to encounter some of the county’s most beautiful species and Berwick is no exception.

Home to hundreds of mute swans in the Tweed estuary moulting colony, Berwick-upon-Tweed has the second largest mute swan colony in Britain. You can see the swans from the riverside and Quayside, but for a closer view, head to West End in Tweedmouth, just over the Old Bridge.

Seals and otters can also be spotted in the River Tweed and dolphins can sometimes be seen from the end of the pier and if you walk north along the coast from Berwick, you will find the Puffin breeding site at Needles eye.

Berwick Wildlife Group has a calendar of events throughout the year. They host talks, walks and wildlife visits, led by members or experts, and are open to anyone interested in learning more about the wildlife around them.

For an even closer wild experience, Northern Experience Wildlife Tours operate exclusive, guided, bird watching, photography and wildlife tours, holidays and tuition, based in Northumberland, the North Pennines and the Scottish Borders.

Otters can regularly be spotted from the Old Bridge and Riverside and Dolphins from the Pier or Spittal.
