Overview

Riding of the Bounds is a traditional ride-out of the boundaries of Berwick, to keep them known to the Scottish and the English. 2019 date for Riding of the Bounds is Saturday 4th May. Riders registration is NOW OPEN: https://berwickridersassociation.co.uk/register/ 

The Riding of the Bounds now regularly attracts around 100 riders. As well as the cavalcade departing from the town, fun equestrian games are held at the half way halt (weather permitting!) and then the riders head back to the town to be offered refreshments in the Guildhall. 

9am – Gather at the Parade Car Park.

10.30am – Riders leave the Barracks, via Walkergate, and proceed to The Guild Hall. The Mayor grants permission for the traditional ceremony to commence.

RIDING OF THE BOUNDS 2019 – APPROXIMATE TIMINGS

Please note timings are approximate and dependent on weather conditions and any delays on route.

9.00am – Judging of Best Turned Out classes.

9.45am – All riders to be mounted.10.00am – Call to Order. Riders to assemble behind the Chief Marshal and proceed to the Barracks Square.

10.30am – Cavalcade will leave the Barracks and proceed to the Guildhall via Walkergate.

10.45am – The Chief Marshal will arrive at the Guildhall to seek permission from the Mayor to ride the Boundaries.

11.00am – Cavalcade leaves the Guildhall.

11.30am – Riders arrive at the Jingling Bridge. Procession will continue along Seaview, Newfields and onto old road.

11.40am – A1 Roundabout crossing, along A1 and onto Conundrum Farm road.

12.00pm – Riders will proceed along the fields to The Border Wall.

12.20pm – Arrive at Woodhills.

12.40pm – Duns road crossing.

13.00pm – On to Bridleway.13.15pm – Top of New Mills.

13.30pm – River crossing at New Mills. (If river conditions are not suitable, horses will continue along track and cross via Canty’s Bridge.) NO CARS PLEASE – ON-FOOT SPECTATORS ONLY AT NEW MILLS.

13.45pm – Riders arrive at Gainslaw Farm. The optional gallop around the Point will take place immediately weather permitting, these riders will arrive at Gainslaw Farm at approximately 2.00pm. Gallop can be viewed from Canty’s Bridge.

REST BREAK

14.30pm – Trotting Races ( weather permitting)

15.15pm – Calvalcade will depart Gainslaw Farm and head down over the Bridge, turning off into Canty's car park and continuing off-road up to Baldersbury.

15.30pm – Arrive at Baldersbury hill.

15.40pm – Letham Shanks and flyover bridge crossing. ( Private Farm – No viewing points)

15.50pm – Chief Marshal receives the Flag at castle Terrace.

16.00pm – Cavalcade arrives at The Guildhall. Chief Marshal will report to the Mayor and return the Flag. Riders return to Wallace green and parade car parks.

RIDING OF THE BOUNDS FAIR

10am-2pm - Variety of stallholders, local charities stalls, and refreshments in the Guildhall.

ROAD CLOSURES

There will be delays in traffic and the Parade and Chapel Street car parks will be closed to the public.
