How did Glam Racket Events get its name?
Seppe: The name “Glam Racket” comes from a dear mutual friend of ours, Davie Wright, who passed away far too young. He was an inspiration to all of us. His business was called Glam Racket Interiors, and naming this venture after him helps carry on his legacy and keep our team together.
How did the team meet?
Tall Paul: We’ve all crossed paths many times over the years at flea markets. About three years ago, I went to Seppe at Fern Antiques for a cabinet and started working on Saturdays, which quickly turned into five days a week. The rest of the team was introduced through Fern, and we’ve stayed together ever since.
Have you always been involved in the antiques industry?
T Paul: I specialise in vintage cameras and photographs, and I’ve been in the trade for 20 years, travelling to various fairs across the country and Europe. I started after leaving my job and, with a young family, took my personal camera collection to an antique market. It blossomed into a full-time business. I’m always on the move, and I recently attended a specialist camera fair at the Royal National Hotel in Bloomsbury. It’s inspiring to see new and younger traders there.
Seppe: I’ve been into flea markets and fairs since I was 10 years old, helping my mum and other dealers at antique centres. After trying a few different jobs, I decided at 20 to buy a van and fully immerse myself in the antique world. Then ten years ago I started Fern Antiques in Jesmond with my wife Claire, fulfilling an ambition to have our own place. It’s been a mighty feat, but incredibly rewarding.
Dennis – I was always involved in antiques too, my Great Aunt was an antiques dealer, and she took me to my first auction when I was 7 years old! I had an electrical business, but I always found myself involved in the trade, especially dealing with wood. No matter the type, or colour, every tree is different, and the styles create harmony no matter what!
Small Paul – In the late 80s, actually, 1989, I bought antiques from a clearance and attended my first Newark Antiques Fair, and from then I was hooked… Not much more to say, I thoroughly enjoy being a part of the trade, and I hope this weekend inspires others alike.
Seppe & Tall Paul: We’ve both learned more from the antiques trade than we ever did in school. We’re constantly researching, probably because we always personify our items. It’s a much more explorative and creative way to learn. For us, it’s not about the money; it’s about sparking curiosity in others and inviting them into the trade just as we were.
Why did you pick Paxton House and the area, and how has your experience been hosting an event there?
Seppe: We considered various options for hosting this event, but we were in awe of Paxton House. The team there was enthusiastic and had all the amenities we needed, including lodges and accommodation in Berwick. Location scouting can be challenging since you often look through rose-tinted glasses, but the grounds are so beautiful, and the town has been incredibly supportive. Planning and hard work are essential for events like this, but the town and our team’s encouragement have made us very excited.
What are your hopes for the weekend?
All: Decent weather, ha! But in all seriousness, we want everyone who visits Paxton House—the dealers, the visitors, everyone involved—to have a wonderful experience. We hope they leave saying, ‘That was fun, I’d like to go back,’ or ‘Look at what I found!’ or ‘We had a brilliant time, walked along the Tweed, and visited the grounds.’
We meet so many enchanting characters in this trade. They’re all very grounded and committed for life. We want to share that fun and welcoming atmosphere with the public too.
