‘One Night in Miami…’ – Sound and Vision Film Night
Sunday 7th May | 7pm | Barrels Alehouse, on Bridge Street
Directed by Regina King, and based on a play by Kemp Powers, it imagines what might have taken place in a Miami motel room the night following Cassius Clay’s victory in his fight against Sonny Liston (becoming the World Boxing Heavyweight Champion). Clay and three of his friends, Nation of Islam preacher Malcolm X, soul singer Sam Cooke, and NFL superstar Jim Brown, all gather in the motel to celebrate his win. This actually did happen, but most everything that they do or say is imagined.
This film shows four proud Black men at the height of their powers, with the abilities and platform to influence a generation of Americans; against a backdrop of the fight for civil rights, and just a few months after JFK’s assassination, there is obvious tension in the country, and in the motel room itself, as the friends talk about their possible roles in the ongoing fight for rights. Great writing, and all four main performances are excellent.
FREE entry (and free popcorn) but please message me back if you’d like a seat, as spaces are limited.
