The Theory of the Evolution of Life on Earth
Two talks by Elizabeth Devon investigate into the main evolutionary events of animals and plants through geological time.
Monday 5th September
After a brief summary of the development of the theory of evolution, you will cover the main events from simple to complex life in the oceans, to the explosion of life on land. We will then discuss the subsequent rapid evolution of the vertebrates, together with mass extinctions.
Monday 12th September
The evolution of plants on Earth will be discussed, from the all-important process of photosynthesis to the fact that, without plants, there would be no life on land. Then we will explore the inter-relationships between rocks, soils, flora and fauna.
All are welcome and no previous knowledge is assumed. Each talk lasts 2 hours (10am- 12 noon) and there will be an interval of 20 minutes during the lecture, where refreshments will be served.
